{"id":5363,"date":"2024-09-07T09:52:48","date_gmt":"2024-09-07T13:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/?p=5363"},"modified":"2024-09-07T09:52:23","modified_gmt":"2024-09-07T13:52:23","slug":"after-youve-gone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/after-youve-gone\/","title":{"rendered":"After You&#8217;ve Gone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"After You&#039;ve Gone\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E6xipBhgw-4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t remember when or where I learned &#8220;After You&#8217;ve Gone,&#8221; but I&#8217;m pretty sure I played it when I worked the restaurants in Antwerp with Nick Boons (which I&#8217;ve written about in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/some-of-these-days\/\">a previous post<\/a>). We would have just played the chorus, and I picked up the verse more recently, probably from the redoubtable Martin Grosswendt. He sang it, but I just play it and sing the chorus.<\/p>\n<p>One more thing about the verse &#8212; there is an F to Bb change in the third bar of the second half, and I was having trouble figuring out a comfortable way to play the melody over it&#8230; and then realized I could get it easily by using the Gary Davis D to G move I explained in my previous post about &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/you-got-to-move\/\">You Got to Move<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; Davis is like a school for how to play ragtime and tin pan alley tunes on guitar.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5366\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Henry-Creamer.jpg?resize=149%2C238&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Henry-Creamer.jpg?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Henry-Creamer.jpg?resize=188%2C300&amp;ssl=1 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/>&#8220;After You&#8217;ve Gone&#8221; was published in 1918, part of a new wave of pop material written by Black songwriters &#8212; in this case the team of Turner Layton and Henry Creamer, who also wrote &#8220;Way Down Yonder in New Orleans&#8221; and a hit about the first national blues craze, &#8220;Everybody&#8217;s Crazy &#8216;Bout the Doggone Blues (But I&#8217;m Happy).&#8221; Creamer later teamed up with the Harlem stride pianist James P. Johnson, and produced &#8220;If I Could Be With You (One Hour Tonight).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Layton meanwhile went to London, where he teamed up with Clarence &#8220;Tandy&#8221; Johnstone and became one of the most popular cabaret and recording teams in the UK, making dozens of records &#8212; including a couple that are additionally interesting for including the only recorded solos by Joseph Kekuku, <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5367 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Layton_and_Johnstone_1933-e1725232287661.jpg?resize=258%2C410&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"410\" \/>the inventor of the Hawaiian steel guitar style. (Tip of the hat to Bernard MacMahon, who discovered those and presented them in the documentary series <em>American Epic<\/em>, for which I wrote the accompanying book.) Johnstone returned to the US in the 1920s, but Layton remained a favorite of London audiences until his death in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>Like &#8220;Some of These Days,&#8221; a composition from eight years earlier, likewise by a Black songwriter and popularized by Sophie Tucker, &#8220;After You&#8217;ve Gone&#8221; is a classic kiss-off ballad, on the theme &#8220;you broke my heart and you&#8217;ll be sorry,&#8221; and I&#8217;m tempted to think it was written to capitalize on the earlier hit, but that&#8217;s just a guess.
