I don\u2019t know why or how I chose it, but<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-407 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Seeger-Gazette-298x300.jpg?resize=243%2C245\" alt=\"Seeger Gazette\" width=\"243\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Seeger-Gazette.jpg?resize=298%2C300&amp;ssl=1 298w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Seeger-Gazette.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Seeger-Gazette.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/> I listened to it over and over, and learned most of the songs by heart. Not all of them were masterpieces, by any means\u2014like <em>Broadside<\/em> magazine, which Pete co-founded a few years later, <em>Gazette <\/em>was meant to encourage people to write songs about what was happening in the world around them. It was apparently intended as the first issue of a sort of musical newsletter in which Pete would present current topical songs on a regular basis, though it was several years before he released <em>Gazette, Vol. 2<\/em>, and there was no third volume \u2014 by the early 1960s <em>Broadside<\/em> had picked up the baton and young singers were recording their own songs.<\/p>\n<p>There were some forgettable songs on <em>Gazette<\/em>\u2014I\u2019m guessing no one on the planet can sing \u201cThe TVA Song\u201d or \u201cThe Demi Song,\u201d or \u201cTeachers Blues,\u201d or \u201cThe Ballad of Sherman Wu,\u201d and I&#8217;m one of the few who knows &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/martian-love-song\/\">Martian Love Song<\/a>&#8221; \u2014but also some that every folksinger with left-wing inclinations learned and many of us still remember, like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/pretty-boy-floyd\/\">Pretty Boy Floyd<\/a>&#8221; and this one.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-416\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/First-National-Bank-300x238.jpg?resize=300%2C238\" alt=\"First National Bank\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/First-National-Bank.jpg?resize=300%2C238&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/First-National-Bank.jpg?w=568&amp;ssl=1 568w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cBanks of Marble\u201d was written in 1948 by Les Rice, an apple grower in Newburgh, New York, and introduced by Pete at a hootenanny within the next year or so. To give an idea of how young I was when I learned this, I pictured the \u201cbanks\u201d as banks of a river or canal \u2014 which makes no sense at all, but I still have that picture in my mind, of sloping marble banks with water running between them.<\/p>\n<p>The song is a more didactic \u201cThis Land Is Your Land,\u201d and I haven\u2019t heard anyone sing it since I was a kid, but when you picture the young Communists gathered around the fountain in Washington Square Park circa 1958, singing songs of the working class struggle, this is what they were singing &#8212; and now that &#8220;socialism&#8221; seems to be an acceptable term in American politics, maybe we&#8217;ll be getting some new songs like this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A more didactic
