I don&#8217;t remember why I changed them, or even if I was aware I had, and when I recently listened to his version I thought his were more interesting&#8230; But I&#8217;ve been playing it this way for a quarter century and it feels right to me.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2131 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Townes-van-Zandt-live.jpg?resize=268%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Townes-van-Zandt-live.jpg?resize=297%2C300&amp;ssl=1 297w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Townes-van-Zandt-live.jpg?w=350&amp;ssl=1 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/>As with all the Townes songs I do, I learned this off his <em>Live at the Old Quarter<\/em> double album from 1973 &#8212; it&#8217;s the pure, stripped down experience, and reminds me of what he was like live: dry, difficult, and magical. I&#8217;ve already written about my experiences of Townes over the years and my problems performing his songs in my post for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/waiting-round-die\/\">Waiting Round to Die<\/a>.&#8221; The short version is I always loved his concerts and his writing, but most of the songs were so dark I couldn&#8217;t do them convincingly.<\/p>\n<p>The exceptions were &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/pancho-lefty\/\">Pancho and Lefty<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; partly because I tended to do it as a duet with my pal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/pancho-lefty\/\">Monte<\/a> and partly because it&#8217;s pretty much foolproof &#8212; and this one.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4044 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/cowboy-speelkaarten-americana.jpg?resize=175%2C245&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"245\" \/>To me, this is less a song than a modern saloon recitation in the tradition of classics like &#8220;The Face on the Barroom Floor,&#8221; T. Texas Tyler&#8217;s &#8220;Deck of Cards,&#8221; and Chuck Berry&#8217;s &#8220;Downbound Train.&#8221; It&#8217;s only marginally weirder, and similarly moralistic, and in its way it may be the most traditional thing Townes ever wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Other than that, I don&#8217;t have much to say about it except that Townes was a terrific wordsmith and I love the way the lyric flows.
