{"id":389,"date":"2016-02-29T07:00:17","date_gmt":"2016-02-29T12:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/?p=389"},"modified":"2016-02-27T22:25:52","modified_gmt":"2016-02-28T03:25:52","slug":"east-virginia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/east-virginia\/","title":{"rendered":"East Virginia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"East Virginia\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dv_rMsc_waA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I was wandering around Harvard Square, shortly after I began wandering by myself, and there was a thin, bearded man standing in a doorway near Woolworth&#8217;s, playing an autoharp and singing &#8220;East Virginia.&#8221; I knew I had it on a record, though I couldn&#8217;t remember which, but <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-133\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ramblin-jack-lp.jpg?resize=250%2C252\" alt=\"ramblin jack lp\" width=\"250\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ramblin-jack-lp.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ramblin-jack-lp.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>in those days I didn&#8217;t have many records, so I went home and dug through them and found it on my one Ramblin&#8217; Jack Elliott album, and learned it.<\/p>\n<p>I was already familiar with Jim Garland&#8217;s union rewrite, which the Almanac singers had recorded on <em>Talking Union<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want your millions, Mister,<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t want your diamond ring.<br \/>\nAll I want is the right to live, Mister,<br \/>\nGive me back my job again.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, the union song never appealed to me but the love song stuck in my mind, and I&#8217;ve had a sort of odd history with it. I recorded it on my LP in the early 1980s, and again on my CD in the late 1990s, but I&#8217;ve never played it in public &#8212; I have no idea why, but there it is.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the most popular ballads with early rural recording artists, and there are fine versions by some of the best: Buell Kazee, Clarence Ashley, Walter Williams (an obscure banjo player from Kentucky, whose version was one of the banjo arrangements Pete Seeger worked out and published in <em>How to Play the 5-String Banjo<\/em>), and the Carter Family.
