He performed it in the movie <em>I Walked with a Zombie<\/em> (1943), then recorded it with Gerald Clark&#8217;s Caribbean Serenaders on Keynote Records, the leftist New York label known for the Almanac Singers, Josh White, and various jazz artists&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but the version I sing has completely different verses, on the same theme as Buffy Sainte-Marie&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/johnny-be-fair\/\">Johnny Be Fair<\/a>.&#8221; Apparently this <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2905 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Lord-Melody.jpg?resize=275%2C271&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"271\" \/>version was composed by another calypsonian, Lord Melody, who recorded it in 1962 as &#8220;Wau Wau&#8221; (as in, &#8220;Woe, woe is me&#8221;). That version was shortly retitled &#8220;Shame and Scandal in the Family&#8221; and recorded by the Puerto Rican actor Shawn Elliott, who sang it to a modified ska backing, followed by a British ska recording by Lance Percival and versions in various styles by everyone from the Kingston Trio to TriniLopez to Peter Tosh with the Wailers.<\/p>\n<p>Lancelot&#8217;s version was recorded by Odetta in the1950s, on an album my parents had&#8230; so I&#8217;m guessing that&#8217;s where I first heard it. I don&#8217;t <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2904 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Odetta-LP.jpg?resize=250%2C249&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Odetta-LP.jpg?w=250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Odetta-LP.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>remember hearing any of the other versions, so I don&#8217;t know how I ended up knowing the Lord Melody lyrics. I have a faint memory of finding them in an old issue of <em>Sing Out!<\/em> magazine, and may have then attached them to my rough memory of Odetta&#8217;s melody&#8230; but I really don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I started performing it in the early 1980s as an experiment in fingerpicking Caribbean rhythms. I&#8217;d gotten interested in Congolese guitar &#8212; an interest that later took me to Lubumbashi and lessons from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/masanga\/\">Jean-Bosco Mwenda<\/a> &#8212; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/perrys-march\/\">Perry Lederman<\/a> and I were jamming pretty regularly on &#8220;Jamaica Farewell,&#8221; so I was looking for a way to fit that kind of picking into my performing repertoire, and this lyric was an obvious winner &#8212; though I later switched to playing &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/iko-iko\/\">Iko Iko<\/a>&#8221; with a similar arrangement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This semi-feminist calypso is a rewrite of a song with a somewhat different title by the Trinidadian calypsonian Sir Lancelot.
