{"id":203,"date":"2016-02-17T07:00:01","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T12:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/?p=203"},"modified":"2017-02-04T19:20:03","modified_gmt":"2017-02-05T00:20:03","slug":"sam-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/sam-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Hall (Josh White)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sam Hall\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DJcmo4INNos?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I loved Josh White&#8217;s music from the start, and had plenty of parental support: he was the only guitarist whose work my father could recognize instantly, and my mother clearly had a mild crush on him (not an unusual reaction). <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-204 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/josh-lp.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"josh lp\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/josh-lp.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/josh-lp.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I had his <em>Chain Gang<\/em> and <em>Southern Exposure<\/em> 78 albums pretty early, but don&#8217;t recall learning any songs off them, probably because at that point the guitar parts were too daunting &#8212; in any case, my basic Josh repertoire came from a slightly later acquisition, the Elektra two-record &#8220;best of&#8221; set compiled from his 1950s recordings. It was heavily slanted to blues, but included a couple of British Isles songs, or at least this one, which I learned immediately and sang with great relish.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently descended from a serious gallows-last-words ballad about a young chimney sweep named Jack Hall (I got his first name wrong on the video) who was executed in the late eighteenth century, by the mid 1800s it had become &#8220;Samuel Hall,&#8221; a comic parody of that form. It seems to have been a barroom and fraternity favorite in the United States in the early twentieth century, and was included by Carl Sandburg in his <em>American Songbag, <\/em>so there&#8217;s no telling where Josh picked it up. In any case, he sang it with grisly pleasure, and in the context of his repertoire of protest blues I understood it as a generalized attack on all authorities, secular or religious, and respectable people in general &#8212; and took great pleasure in the gorier bits.
