{"id":194,"date":"2016-02-28T07:00:54","date_gmt":"2016-02-28T12:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/?p=194"},"modified":"2018-11-21T10:19:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T15:19:17","slug":"do-re-mi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/do-re-mi\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Re Mi (Woody Guthrie)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Do Re Mi\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8tqQpKN3GkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Woody Guthrie&#8217;s <em>Dust Bowl Ballads<\/em> came to me as the soundtrack of <em>Bound for Glory<\/em>, as well as <em>The Grapes of Wrath<\/em>, which I read around age eleven, right after <em>In Dubious Battle.<\/em> I&#8217;m guessing my parents steered me to Steinbeck because of my infatuation with Woody &#8212; you hear an eleven-year-old singing about dust storms, what else are you going to do but hand him Steinbeck?<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-195 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/dust-bowl-ballads-300x298.jpg?resize=300%2C298\" alt=\"dust bowl ballads\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/dust-bowl-ballads.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/dust-bowl-ballads.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>I don&#8217;t think I made an effort to learn the songs on that album &#8212; I just listened to it so often that after a while I knew most of them all the way through, and all of them some of the way through. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be &#8220;Do Re Mi,&#8221; partly because of the great chorus, and because the message was clear and meaningful even to a kid who was growing up in a very different time and place.<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, I almost got a taste of the reality, when my friend Rob and I got a super-cheap flight to London on Laker Airways, and something like a fifth of the passengers were refused entry and sent back to the US for lack of funds. (We were as impecunious as the others, but a distant cousin of Rob&#8217;s had just been elected Lord Mayor of London, so we gave the immigration authorities his number, and then had to wait for four hours in a little room while they debated whether it would be worse to bother the Lord Mayor about a couple of wretched Yanks with a guitar and a washboard (if we were lying) or turn away the Lord Mayor&#8217;s cousin (if we were telling the truth). Eventually they called him and let us in, with a visa for two weeks and the parting words, &#8220;I hope you have a pleasant visit, and that I will <em>NOT<\/em> see you busking in Green Park tube station.&#8221; <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-198 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rod_Stewart.jpg?resize=136%2C137\" alt=\"Rod_Stewart\" width=\"136\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rod_Stewart.jpg?w=180&amp;ssl=1 180w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elijahwald.com\/songblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Rod_Stewart.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/>Which was very helpful, because it told us where to busk.
